Samsung Electronics has enhanced the sleep apnea feature of its Galaxy Watch to provide more systematic management of sleep health.
The company announced on October 28 that the upgraded sleep apnea feature has received approval from the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), following its clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July.
This enhancement allows users to analyze their breathing disturbances during sleep in three detailed levels.
The sleep apnea feature is a consumer mobile health solution that measures and analyzes breathing data during sleep using Galaxy wearable devices. It enables users to monitor their breathing status and detect moderate to severe signs of sleep apnea.
The newly approved feature utilizes an AI algorithm to analyze the frequency of breathing disturbances per hour during sleep, helping users identify the severity of their breathing issues beyond simple symptom detection.
Users can categorize their breathing disturbance levels into three stages (mild, occasional, frequent) based on frequency, allowing for much more specific and systematic management of their sleep health.
The new sleep apnea feature will be available starting in November for the Galaxy Watch Ultra2, Watch9, and Ring. Future software updates will gradually extend this feature to existing models, including Galaxy Watch7 and Watch8, equipped with Wear OS 7.0 or higher.
Choi Jong-min, Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics' MX Business Health Development Group, stated, "Sleep apnea is a symptom that is often difficult to notice in daily life. We will continue to innovate so that users can recognize warning signs simply by wearing Galaxy wearables during sleep and systematically manage their sleep health, which is key to preventive health care."
