Fentem will succeed Colin Crooks, who is leaving the diplomatic service, and take up her post in March 2027, according to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The appointment will mark her first ambassadorial posting following a career spanning nearly two decades across the British government, including assignments in Japan and Germany and senior positions at the Foreign Office, Treasury and Prime Minister's Office.
Fentem served as principal private secretary to the foreign secretary from 2022 to 2025, one of the most senior positions in the department's private office, after serving as deputy principal private secretary from 2021 to 2022.
She had served as principal private secretary to three foreign secretaries: James Cleverly, David Cameron and David Lammy, working under both Conservative and Labour governments.
Her overseas experience includes serving as counselor for European and economic affairs at the British Embassy in Berlin from 2018 to 2021.
She also held two diplomatic assignments in Tokyo, first as counselor for political and media affairs from 2015 to 2016 and later as counselor for economic affairs from 2017 to 2018.
Before those assignments, Fentem served as director of overseas operations at the Department for International Trade, a budget and spending review program manager at the Treasury, and an assistant private secretary in the Prime Minister's Office.
She joined the British government in 2008, initially working as a policy adviser on preparations for the London 2012 Olympics.
Beyond her diplomatic credentials, Fentem has an unusual academic background for a senior foreign service official.
She graduated from the University of Cambridge with a bachelor's degree in Classics before earning a master's degree and doctorate in archaeology and ancient history from University College London (UCL), according to her former school, Sir William Perkins's School.
Her doctoral dissertation, completed in 2008, examined cultural exchanges between the ancient Aegean world and the Near East during the Bronze and Early Iron Ages, focusing on imported artifacts and their influence on local societies.
In a September 2025 podcast interview with her former school, Fentem discussed how studying Classics helped shape her diplomatic career, emphasizing the importance of cultural understanding and critical thinking in international relations.
She was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2025 for services to British foreign policy. She received the honor from Princess Anne in July that year.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Fentem speaks German at full professional proficiency and French at professional working proficiency. She also lists elementary proficiency in Korean and Japanese.
