The government has decided to share information related to the progress of criminal procedures with crime victims.

On October 30, the Ministry of Justice announced through a press release that it has established the '5th Basic Plan for the Protection and Support of Crime Victims (2027-2031),' which outlines the direction of policies for the next five years. This plan will focus on five key areas: strengthening rights in criminal procedures, integrated support, victim recovery, safety protection, and compensation for damages.

The Basic Plan for the Protection and Support of Crime Victims is a long-term national plan implemented every five years under relevant laws. The Ministry of Justice has continuously expanded economic and psychological support and personal protection systems over the past four iterations. However, there have been ongoing criticisms regarding the inconvenience of victims having to repeatedly explain their situations to multiple agencies and the lack of information sharing between institutions, which has led to gaps in support.

The newly established 5th Basic Plan sets the vision of creating an 'integrated national system for victim protection and support' and aims to establish a practical national safety net that victims can feel.

To begin with, the plan will improve the way information about criminal procedures is provided, ensuring that victims can timely understand the progress of their cases. Additionally, an integrated support system for crime victims will be established, allowing consultations, applications, and result inquiries to be handled in one location, thereby alleviating the inconvenience of multiple visits.

Furthermore, the emergency response system immediately following a crime will be strengthened, and economic support systems, such as crime victim compensation funds, will be reformed.

Information regarding the release or parole of offenders will be directly linked to victim protection measures, and risk management for relational crimes such as stalking and domestic violence will be enhanced. To assist in the effective enforcement of offender compensation, the effectiveness of legal systems such as compensation orders and criminal deposits will also be significantly improved. The Ministry of Justice plans to establish detailed implementation plans annually from next year until 2031 to monitor progress.

Acting Minister of Justice Lee Jin-soo emphasized, 'We will build a comprehensive national system to ensure that victims receive uninterrupted support from the early stages of the incident until their return to daily life.'
