SEOUL, November 04 (AJP) - South Korea has launched a project worth about $22 million to develop an AI system that predicts maintenance needs for military equipment, officials said Wednesday.

The four-year project aims to reduce costs and improve military readiness by analyzing maintenance data from weapons systems, including K2 tanks and FA-50 light combat aircraft.

The Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources held a project launch meeting at the Daejeon Convention Center on Wednesday, attended by about 100 representatives from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the Army, Navy, Air Force and defense research institutions.

The system is based on a framework known as RAM-C, which evaluates the reliability, availability, maintainability and cost of military equipment.

In simpler terms, it examines how often weapons break down, whether they are ready for use, how quickly they can be repaired and how much they cost to maintain throughout their service lives.

By analyzing maintenance records and other military data, the AI system will help determine when equipment needs repairs and how many spare parts should be kept in stock.

The project could also benefit South Korea's defense exports by providing overseas buyers with more accurate estimates of long-term maintenance costs and improving confidence in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services.

KAI will lead the research project in cooperation with military organizations, universities and research institutes.

"We will maintain close cooperation with KAI and participating organizations from industry, academia, research institutions and the military," a government official said.
