SEOUL, November 5 (AJP) - The exterior of Shinsegae Department Store's main store in central Seoul is set to light up with a giant Christmas display this week, kicking off its signature year-end holiday festivities.
According to the retailer on Thursday, the large-scale media display will be unveiled on Friday and run daily from 5 p.m. until midnight through Jan. 31.
Set to the music of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, recorded by a 60-member orchestra in Vienna, Austria, the 3-minute-40-second video follows a bear working at a post office who sets off on a balloon boat carrying letters filled with Christmas wishes. The journey takes the bear to an ice castle, where it completes a Christmas tree.
The department store is expanding its holiday offerings as well, with more of its branches featuring Christmas-themed decorations and installations both indoors and outdoors.
Other major department stores are also stepping up their Christmas festivities, which have become an annual fixture amid heated competition to attract shoppers during the year-end holiday season.
Lotte Department Store, for instance, has adorned its main store with 20,000 lights and set up an illuminated street stretching about 100 meters.
Hyundai Department Store, meanwhile, has transformed spaces at its major branches into Christmas-themed villages evoking the atmosphere of New York streets in the 1980s and 1990s.
