SK Telecom, South Korea's No.1 mobile carrier, made the prediction as the country has seen the number of LTE subscriptions surge. LTE, marketed as a 4G wireless service, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals.
The number of SK Telecom's LTE subscriptions has swellon to 7 million since the carrier commercialized the mobile network in July 2011. LG Uplus' LTE subscriptions has amounted to 4.2 million, while KT's subscriptions has reached 3.5 million.
U.S. mobile carrier Verizon Wireless first achieved the 7-million mark in February and Japan‘s NTT DoCoMo followed suit in November.
U.S.-based research firm Parks Associates predicted that LTE subscriptions worldwide will hit 50 million this year, more than five-fold increase from last year’s 9 million.
