Typhoon Haiyan, after leaving massive destruction in the Philippines, made landfall in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, at 6 a.m. Monday as a tropical storm, news reports said. Quang Ninh is 120 kilometers far from Hanoi.
The Vietnamese authorities started to evacuate 600,000 people from the path of Typhoon Haiyan and banned fishing in nearby waters, they said.
The “super” typhoon devastated the central part of the Philippines where thousands were feared dead in Leyte and nearby Samar province.
Officials said at least 552 were confirmed dead, mostly drowned by tsunami-like sea waves.
