The government Tuesday decided to offer US$5 million in relief aid to the typhoon-devastated Philippines and send a Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) to the Southeast Asian country for medical and rescue work.

The decision was made in a meeting of officials from related government offices and civilian organizations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

South Korea plans to provide the Philippines with assistance, including relief goods such as food, blankets and tents, the ministry said.

The KDRT will consist of 40 members, including 20 medical workers, 14 emergency rescue workers and officials from the Korea International Cooperation Agency, it said.

Super Typhoon Haiyan pounded the central Philippines on Friday, which left thousands dead and staggering destruction in its wake.
