SEOUL -- Smartwatch that can detect signs of physical abnormalities and send quick rescue signals were distributed for the safety of some 1,200 field workers who perform high-risk work at giant steel mills run by Posco, a top steel company in South Korea.

The smartwatch provides golden time to rescue on-site workers when physical abnormalities are detected, the steel company said, adding that's a supplement to the existing system, which could have been difficult to deal with an emergency because employees had to contact each other regularly or check safety through CCTVs.

If a worker experiences a heart attack while patrolling for facility inspection, the smartwatch asks nearby colleagues for emergency rescue. "Safety is the foremost value that can't be exchanged for anything," Chairman Choi Jung-woo said in a statement, urging all executives and employees to get prepared in advance and secure a safe working environment.

Previously, POSCO has introduced a gas leak monitoring system, smart fire monitoring, smart safety helmets, facility inspection drones and the expanded use of CCTVs for the safety of workers.
