LG Uplus demonstrates 5G-connected autonomous parking assist system

SEOUL -- LG Uplus, a mobile carrier in South Korea, has demonstrated an autonomous 5G-connected car parking assist technology that will locate empty parking places in real-time and park a car using sensors such as CCTVS, lidar and radar.

Parking assist features are commonly found in the current generation of cars produced by different makers. However, a driver should move a car to an empty parking space and prompt it to engage in the parking assist mode.

LG Uplus (LGU+) demonstrated its 5G-connected parking service in Seoul on December 17 with Hyundai's luxury sport utility vehicle. Testers using a smartphone app guided the car autonomously to a nearby parking lot and designated an empty space shown on the phone's display for safe parking.

LGU+ has worked with Hanyang University's Automotive Control and Electronics Laboratory (ACELAB) and Controlworks, a domestic autonomous driving technology company. "Through this project, we have completed the foundation for future mobility technology that interlinks the unmanned pickup, driving and parking of autonomous vehicles," LGU+ said.

ACELAB head Sunwoo Myung-ho said that people like the disabled, pregnant women and the elderly would benefit from the 5G-connected autonomous parking service featuring an ensemble of various technologies such as artificial intelligence, CCTVS and cloud computing. LGU+'s AI was combined with CCTVs to locate empty spaces in real-time. Spatial data was relayed to the test car via a 5G-connected control tower using cloud computing technologies.
