SEOUL -- LG Electronics, which released the world's first rollable TV based on organic light-emitting diode technology, has introduced a new premium liquid crystal display TV that can display vibrant colors close to those seen by actual eyes by using nanocell and quantum dot technologies. The new MiniLED TV will be showcased at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2021.

LG said in a statement on December 29 that the 86-inch 8K MiniLED TV has a higher color gamut rate to deliver "pure colors" using some 30,000 mini light-emitting diodes that are less brighter than backlights, light sources.

If the backlight source of an LCD TV emits less light, it can display more vibrant colors. Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays use each diode that works as a light source. However, OLEDs can deteriorate over time to lose their color reproduction rate due to heat created during the operation of a TV or other external factors such as moisture and dust.

"We hope that our MiniLED TV, which has upgraded the weak points of LCD TVs using backlight sources and LCD, would offer a wider range of choices in the global premium TV market," LG said, adding the new LCD TV is the closest thing to an OLED TV.
