Hyundai Wia develops efficient heat management module for electric vehicles

SEOUL -- Hyundai Wia, a parts-making unit of South Korea's Hyundai auto group, has developed an efficient heat management module that can increase the driving distance of electric cars and improve battery life. The new system will be used for Hyundai Motor's dedicated new battery platform from 2023.

The dedicated battery platform called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) signals the start of the auto group's full-fledged campaign to replace combustion engines gradually with hydrogen fuel cells and premium electric batteries. The first model will be IONIQ 5 midsize crossover utility vehicles to be unveiled in 2021.

Hyundai Wia said in a statement on January 18 that its new system can manage heat from driving parts and battery together. Unlike combustion engines, eco-friendly vehicles do not have enough heat sources, so separate heat management devices are essential. Hyundai Wia's system maximizes the efficiency and performance of each part by maintaining the temperature of key components necessary for driving at an appropriate level.

Hyundai Wis said that it optimized the coolant circuit and incorporated parts for refrigerant heat exchangers and coolant distribution supply to maintain the battery at an appropriate temperature. The configuration maximized the space utilization of engine rooms. The company aims to develop an integrated heat management system encompassing cooling modules and indoor air conditioning by 2025.
