Doosan Robotics said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Severance Hospital in Seoul to select priorities in a robot solution and develop technologies and business models. The company will form a task force to develop and apply medical technologies under research by Severance Hospital to robots. The hospital is in charge of medical advice and clinical trials.
"South Korea's medical technology is the best in the world, but medical applications such as surgical robots depend mostly on imports," said Doosan Robotics CEO Choi Dong-hwi. "Through this agreement, we will work with Severance Hospital to develop an indigenous medical system for robots, improve the domestic medical environment and contribute to revitalizing the domestic medical robot industry."
Robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, allows doctors to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. The most widely used clinical robotic surgical system includes a camera arm and mechanical arms with surgical instruments attached to them. Using robotic surgery, surgeons can perform delicate and complex procedures that may have been difficult or impossible with other methods.
