Data released by South Korea's customs office in August 2021 showed that demands for wine have increased in 2020 when the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit South Korea. The number of home drinkers has increased. Wine imports in the first half of 2021 increased 102.4 percent on-year to $32.5 billion. According to the operator of South Korea's top convenience store brand CU, the most favored wine brands were produced in France, accounting for 33.3 percent of total wine sales. About 400,000 bottles of wine are being sold at CU a month.
Lotte Mart said that the company will sell about one million bottles of wine through a discount event on October 7. In September 2021, Lotte Mart's wine sales increased 51.8 percent compared to the same period of last year. "Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the number of home drinkers is increasing and the number of people enjoying wine continues to grow," an unnamed Lotte Mart official was quoted as saying.
