SEOUL -- SK ecoplant joined hands with a public power generation company to invest in green hydrogen facilities abroad, focusing on Australia and the Middle East. Green hydrogen is a type of hydrogen fuel that does not use any fossil fuel during its manufacturing process.

Korea East West Power will purchase green hydrogen made overseas, along with the operation and maintenance of related facilities. SK ecoplant is in charge of hydrogen production solutions including electrolysis technology, which is the most promising method of hydrogen production from water.

Korea East West Power will secure 70,000 tons of green hydrogen by investing in renewable energy projects and water electrolysis facilities overseas. "The two companies will secure overseas green hydrogen production bases to strengthen the competitiveness of our hydrogen industry and secure eco-friendly energy security amid the global energy crisis," CEO Kim Yung-moon said in a statement on April 29.

SK ecoplant, a builder affiliated with South Korea's conglomerate SK Group, has actively acquired environmental companies to solidify its status as an environmental and energy solution provider. In February 2022, SK ecoplant embarked on the production of green hydrogen based on solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) technology at a joint venture plant with Bloom Energy, an American public company.

SOEC runs in regenerative mode to achieve the electrolysis of water by using a solid oxide, or ceramic, electrolyte to produce hydrogen gas and oxygen. SK ecoplant and Bloom Energy have built a 130-kilowatt SOEC facility in Gumi, some 202 kilometers (126 miles) southeast of Seoul. The South Korean company would upgrade SOEC technology to secure the world's most efficient green hydrogen production technology.
