List-mile delivery refers to the last leg of a delivery process. For automated food deliveries using service robots on wheels, a last-mile delivery process will include a short trip to destinations from nearby stores or from robot stations inside apartment complexes where deliverymen would pass food packages to robots.
Yogiyo said in a statement on July 17 that the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) to develop last-mile technologies. The food delivery service company will establish a research and development center inside POSTECH's campus in the southern port city of Pohang in 2023.
Delivery services using autonomous robots have been tested across South Korea webbed with super-fast mobile internet connection networks. Baedal Minjok, the largest food delivery service in South Korea, is demonstrating a door-to-door robot delivery service in Suwon south of Seoul. It is also common to see service robots carrying food from a restaurant kitchen to customers' tables.
