SEOUL, May 22 (AJU PRESS) - South Korea's Hyundai Rotem has signed a contract with the Peruvian Army to provide wheeled armored vehicles, the South Korean Embassy in Peru said Wednesday.

Hyundai Rotem has secured a $60 million contract to supply 30 K808 IFVs, called Baekho (white tiger), through the Seoul-based STX trading company by 2025. The deal could be expanded to cover 90 more units.

The deal was completed about three weeks after the company, affiliated with Hyundai Motor Group, was selected as the preferred bidder on April 30 (local time) by FAME, a state-owned arms manufacturer in Peru.

The Korean armored vehicle, weighing 20 tons and measuring 7.4 meters in length, has eight wheels. It can carry two crew members and ten infantry soldiers.

With a 420-horsepower engine, the IFV can reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour on roads and 8 kilometers per hour in water. Armament options for the vehicle include either a K4 high-speed automatic grenade launcher or a K6 12.7mm heavy machine gun.

Hyundai Rotem has also secured the exclusive rights to supply various maneuver warfare equipment such as tactical and rescue vehicles to the Peruvian military and police through FAME over the next six years.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and government officials attended the signing ceremony.

"Through this project, Peru's security will be further strengthened, and the defense industry's capacity and resilience will also be enhanced," Boluatrte was quoted as saying.

In April 2024, Peru selected Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to build four naval warships under a contract worth $462.9 million.
