SEOUL, Sept. 4 (AJP) - A boat carrying about 40 Myanmar nationals capsized in the Mekong River in Thailand's northern Chiang Rai province on late Monday, leaving around 20 people missing. The incident occurred when the long-tail boat, which had departed from Laos and was heading to Tachileik in Myanmar, overturned in strong currents.

According to local media ThaiPBS, the accident happened when the boat's engine suddenly stopped, causing it to be overwhelmed by the powerful water flow. Rescue efforts have been successful in saving about 20 passengers, while the search continues for those still unaccounted for.

The accident took place near the "Golden Triangle" area, where the borders of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand converge along the Mekong River. This region is known for its complex geography and sometimes challenging navigation conditions.

Thai authorities are coordinating rescue operations in the area, working to locate and retrieve the missing individuals. The incident highlights the potential dangers of river transportation in this part of Southeast Asia, especially during periods of strong currents or inclement weather.
