"There is no impact on his official duties," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters in Tokyo on Wednesday, explaining that the 30-minute checkup was a routine procedure ahead of his scheduled attendance at APEC and G20 summits in South America.
The medical consultation comes at a politically sensitive time for Ishiba, who assumed office on Oct. 1 and recently saw his ruling coalition lose its majority in last month's general election.
Government officials attributed his apparent drowsiness during a recent parliamentary session to the effects of cold medication.
