SEOUL, November 18 (AJP) - India has announced that it successfully test-fired an indigenously developed hypersonic missile.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter) that the test launch had been successfully conducted the previous day from Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha, eastern India.

Singh said, "This is a historic moment and this significant achievement has put our country in the group of select nations having capabilities of such critical and advanced military technologies." However, he did not elaborate on the specifications of the missile.

The Times of India reported that this hypersonic missile is capable of flying at over five times the speed of sound, exceeding 6,200 kilometers per hour, in the upper atmosphere. It is also said to be harder to detect than ballistic missiles, can reach its target more quickly, and can change targets mid-flight.

Currently, the United States, Russia, China, and North Korea have conducted hypersonic missile test launches.
