SEOUL, November 18 (AJP) - Pope Francis has called for an investigation if Israel's attacks in Gaza qualify as genocide, according to excerpts from an upcoming book released on Sunday ahead of the pontiff's jubilee year.

This is the first time the Pope has openly addressed allegations of genocide related to Israel's military campaign. He previously described Israel's attacks in Gaza and Lebanon as "immoral" and disproportionate, arguing they exceed the rules of war.

The book, Hope Never Disappoints. Pilgrims Towards a Better World, by Hernán Reyes Alcaide, is based on interviews with the pontiff and will be released ahead of the 2025 jubilee, a year expected to draw millions of pilgrims to Rome.

In excerpts published by La Stampa, Francis stated that "some experts" see the situation in Gaza as having genocidal traits and called for a thorough investigation to confirm whether it meets international legal definitions. The Pope has previously met with both Israeli hostages' families and Palestinians affected by the conflict, highlighting the suffering on both sides.

The ongoing war, triggered by Hamas' October 2023 attack on Israel, has resulted in over 43,000 deaths in Gaza, according to local officials. Many of the dead are reported to be women and children. International courts in The Hague are handling legal cases related to the conflict, including allegations of war crimes and genocide.

The Pope also used the book to address global migration issues, calling for collective action and denouncing restrictive immigration policies. He emphasized a "globalization of charity" to counter the widespread indifference toward migrants. Additionally, he referenced the war in Ukraine, which has displaced thousands since its onset.
