They visited a remand prison in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, where Yoon is confined, in an attempt to either bring him to the CIO headquarters in Gwacheon in the same province or question him at a separate facility there, but to no avail. They were forced to return after a five-hour standoff with Yoon, who refuses any questioning by the CIO.
Unless consent is obtained, they cannot question a suspect after 9 p.m. in consideration of human rights.
Yoon, who appeared for a hearing in his impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court of Korea in Seoul the previous day, continues to maintain his stance that the CIO's investigation is "illegal and invalid." His legal representatives said in a statement, "The CIO's repeated attempts to force him into questioning constitute a serious violation of the law."
Meanwhile, the CIO also attempted to raid Yoon's official residence in Hannam-dong, Seoul to secure evidence related to the debacle, but its entry was blocked by his security officials.
This is just the latest in a series of attempts that have been previously thwarted.
