SEOUL, January 24 (AJP) - The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has slightly overtaken the ruling People Power Party (PPP) in support ratings, according to a poll released on Friday.

Pollster Gallup Korea surveyed over 1,000 adults earlier this week and found that about 40 percent of respondents supported the DP, while some 38 percent preferred the PPP.

The slightest reversal came amid a tight race between the two parties within the margin of error for several weeks, with the PPP recovering from a sharp drop in popularity following President Yoon Suk Yeol's botched martial law debacle last month.

Compared to a similar survey released last week, support for the PPP dropped by 1 percent, while the DP gained 4 percent.

As for the most favored candidate for the next president, the DP's leader Lee Jae-myung led with 31 percent, followed by Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo at 11 percent, and former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon at 5 percent.

Regarding Yoon's impeachment trial, nearly 60 percent said he should be ousted, while 36 percent were opposed. Support for impeachment was highest among those in their 20s to 40s.

The poll was conducted through phone interviews using randomly selected mobile numbers, with a response rate of 16.4 percent.
