Two South Korean rappers received suspended jail terms Thursday for smoking marijuana.

A district court in Seoul handed down an eight-month prison term, suspended for two years, to rapper Iron, while Kidoh received a six-month jail sentence suspended for a year.

Iron was charged with smoking marijuana three times between December 2014 and March last year, and Kidoh was accused of smoking the drug at a Bangkok bar in October 2015. Marijuana carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Prosecution data showed the number of drug offenders in South Korea hit a record high of 11,916 in 2015, up 19.4 percent from the previous year. Last year, some 56 kilograms of methamphetamine called "Ice" and 24 kilograms of marijuana were seized.
