SEOUL -- SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics announced the successful completion of South Korea’s first interoperability assessment between 5G Standalone (SA) Core and other commercial network systems over a 5G network.

SK Telecom (SKT) said in a statement on Monday that the interoperability assessment is the final stage for verifying the validity of 5G SA data transmission. Commercialization will improve data processing efficiency by threefold and allow efficient control for supporting massive data traffic.

South Korean firms commercialized 5G mobile networks based on non-standalone (NSA) standards. The 5G SA system is optimized for new services such as autonomous driving, smart factorries, augumented and virtual reality.

SKT said the 5G SA Core not only supports technologies including network slicing and function modularization based on 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a collaboration between groups of telecom standards associations, but also offers additional functions such as billing, subscriber management and operational convenience system.

"SK Telecom has been continuously focusing on researching and developing the SA technology in order to provide customers a differentiated service quality with innovative products, which will be launched in the first half of next year," Park Jin-hyo, head of SKT's ICT R&D center, was quoted as saying.

“The fundamental structure of 5G SA is built on a completely new configuration, successfully delivering the most optimized 5G service to customers and enterprises across numerous industries," said Jeon Jae-ho, who heads Samsung's R&D, Networks Business.

SKT and Samsung have agreed to push for joint research in 6G evolution technologies while developing and commercializing 5G-related network technologies, smart solutions, innovative devices and software.
