SEOUL -- An intelligent food service robot developed by LG Electronics was put into operation at a restaurant in Seoul. Equipped with self-driving technology, it can avoid collision on the move and carry four food trays to customers.

LG said in a statement on Monday that its "Cloi ServeBot" has been deployed at one of CJ Foodville's franchise restaurants in central Seoul. This marked the first deployment of LG's foodservice robot at a  restaurant since it was showcased at CES 2020 in Las Vegas.

The robot can bring food to customers and carry empty dishes back to the kitchen, LG said, adding that when it detects an obstacle, it says "I'm sorry. May I pass by for a moment?" The robot plays a song on the move so that customers can recognize it. Three extra trays can be used to carry four dishes.

As it is useful for carrying dishes in hot or heavy bowls, employees can focus more carefully on serving customers, LG said. "We will continue to introduce robots that can provide new value to customers and contribute to creating a society where humans and robots work together," Roh Jin-seo, head of LG's robot business center, was quoted as saying.

LG has partnered with CJ Foodville, the franchise restaurant wing of South Korean entertainment and food conglomerate CJ, to develop a lineup of food robots that would help workers and reduce their workload at restaurants. In November last year, a noodle-making robot appeared at CJ Foodville's buffet chain.

LG has developed various service robots such as CLOi, an artificial intelligence-based autonomous service robot which provides navigational services and controls connected appliances such as an air conditioning system. At Incheon International Airport, South Korea's main gateway, CLOi intelligent robots are helping travelers navigate through the complex.
