SK Telecom teams up with major hospital to develop AI video diagnostic assistance solution

SEOUL -- A major hospital in South Korea will work with SK Telecom to develop a video diagnostic assistance solution using artificial intelligence that would reduce the burden on medical staff by diagnosing disease conditions more quickly and accurately and allow patients to receive faster treatment.

The Catholic Medical Center (CMC) with 6,300 beds in eight hospitals will provide high-quality medical big data and verify the solution to improve completeness for commercialization. CMC has South Korea's largest single system to manage medical information about 15 million people.

"This agreement with SK Telecom is a good opportunity to lead the AI healthcare industry," Kim Dae-jin, head of CMC's information convergence promotion center, said in a statement on April 30.

SK Telecom (SKT), a key unit of South Korea's third-largest conglomerate SK Group, will develop an AI video diagnostic assistance solution by analyzing and learning big data based on AI capabilities such as Meta Learner, an AI automation platform that can develop field-optimized AI solutions across various domains.

Meta-learning is a subfield of machine learning where automatic learning algorithms are applied to metadata about machine learning experiments. SKT has used Meta Leaner to develop vision AI solutions that automatically recognize photos and images and analyze them with AI to find meaningful information.

"Competition for the introduction of AI technology is also in full swing in the medical field," SKT's chief technology officer Kim Yoon said, adding that with accumulated AI and information and communications technology, SKT would open a new horizon for AI healthcare with CMC.

CMC and SKT would demonstrate vision AI solutions to ensure the safety of patients with mental illness and developmental disabilities by applying an unexpected situation response solution using AI CCTV with the consent of guardians to prevent accidents in hospitals. They would seek to develop an AI full-stack solution.
