SEOUL -- 11ST, the online shopping mall wing of South Korea's largest mobile carrier SK Telecom, has launched a shopping service for consumers who wish to buy from Amazon, the world's largest online shopping mall. Products directly sold by Amazon are available through 11ST's online mall.
South Korea has a 160 trillion won ($137.2 billion) online shopping mall market as of 2020. Despite a thriving market, consumers who wish to buy products sold through foreign online stores such as Amazon and eBay had to rely on middlemen services because many sellers do not provide international shipping services to South Korea.
The lack of international shipping services has created a new trend called "Jikgoo," (direct buying in Korean), with small foreign logistics companies offering parcel relay services. According to the national statistical service, South Korea's Jikgoo market stood at 4.1 trillion won in 2020.
11ST said in a statement that the company has launched "Amazon Global Store," a one-stop Amazon shopping service. 11ST customers can search for items sold by Amazon and make orders using the mall's user interface. This is Amazon's first shopping service through a local shopping mall operator.
"Now, 11ST customers can conveniently enjoy shopping at Amazon without having to experience a language barrier," 11ST CEO Lee Sang-ho was quoted as saying. The company has prepared a special selection of some 160,000 products favored by South Korean Amazon shoppers. Customers can pay shipping and customs fees, and it will take up to ten days to have Amazon products.
