SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has showcased a smartwatch-based sleep care service capable of providing tips to establish better sleep habits such as reducing caffeine consumption. Users can check the time and quality of their sleep every day through their sleep score displayed on watches. The service also suggests personalized exercise programs depending on users' physical conditions.

Samsung said in a statement that the solution called "One UI 5 Watch" was disclosed on May 4. Based on five different heart rate zones, users will receive various exercise guides such as warm-ups and hard training. Mountain hikers and cyclists can check their location using the direction guidance function.

One UI 5 Watch incorporated safety functions that notify users in case of an emergency. Anyone can get connected to a national rescue team after pressing a button five times in a row and confirming to use the call. The service will be demonstrated in May on Samsung Members app for Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 4 series users. The conglomerate aims to officially adopt the solution in its new Galaxy Watch, which will be unveiled in the second half of 2023.

"We hope the management system of our new One UI 5 Watch will help Galaxy Watch users improve their sleep quality and enjoy a healthy and lively daily life based on better sleeping habits," Samsung's digital health team head Hon Pak said in a statement on May 4.

At a media briefing on February 15, Minister Oh Yoo-kyung of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said South Korea had about 670,000 people suffering from insomnia. Government data showed that the number of South Koreans with insomnia skyrocketed to 113,207 in 2020 from 543,184 in 2016.

Other domestic companies are also striving to provide smart sleep-care solutions. In January 2023, LG Electronics disclosed "brid.zzz," a solution that analyzes sleep patterns and creates auditory illusions that enable consumers to fall into a deep sleep. Users can listen to different frequencies by wearing wireless earphones weighing about 0.01 pounds each.

In October 2022, South Korea's beauty product maker Amorepacific unveiled its scheme to release skincare products for good sleeping by working with Asleep, a domestic health startup specializing in artificial intelligence-based analysis solutions for breathing while asleep.
