SEOUL, October 23 (AJP) - SEOUL (AJP) — Hyundai Rotem said Wednesday it is developing what would be the world's first hydrogen-fueled battle tank.

The Korean company, affiliated with Hyundai Motor Group, is collaborating with the Agency for Defense Development and the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement to develop a hydrogen-powered version of the K2 tank, the Army's main battle tank, a company official told AJP.

The next-generation tank will be equipped with hydrogen fuel cells, motors and electric batteries instead of the diesel engine currently used in the K2 tank's power pack.

The company aims to produce the vehicle after 2040. As an interim solution, Hyundai Rotem will first produce a diesel-electric hybrid version, another official said.

"This next-generation tank is expected to enhance both its firepower and its ability to deliver preemptive strikes on targets through the application of an AI-based fire control system," he added.
