SEOUL, July 2 (AJP) - Hyundai Motor sold a record number of vehicles in the U.S. in the first half of this year, the automaker said on Thursday.
Combined sales of Hyundai and its affiliate Kia totaled 920,383 vehicles in the first six months of this year, up 3 percent from a year earlier.
Hyundai including its luxury brand Genesis sold 489,656 vehicles, while Kia sold 430,727.
The record sales were attributed to an increase in sales of eco-friendly vehicles, which jumped 47 percent to a record 265,514, accounting for 31.2 percent of total sales.
Hyundai's top-selling model was the Tucson with 117,612, followed by the Elantra with 79,839 and the Santa Fe with 64,300. For Kia, the top models were the Sportage with 94,907 units, the Telluride with 73,602 and the K4 with 73,579.
In the meantime, GM sold 1.34 million vehicles in the U.S. during the same period, down 6.8 percent from a year earlier, while Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda sold 1.24 million and 756,920 vehicles, respectively.
