South Korea's foreign ministry disciplinary committee agreed to expel a senior diplomat in Ethiopia over allegations he had raped a contracted female worker.
The unnamed diplomat lost his job in a decision by the ministry's five-member committee, according to Yonhap News Agency. He would face a criminal investigation by state prosecutors. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has described the case as "very deplorable".
The decision came after the ministry launched a separate probe into allegations that South Korea's ambassador to the African country had sexually harassed female interns from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), a state organization which implements South Korea's grant aid programs for developing countries.
The scandal came after a diplomat in charge of cultural affairs at South Korea's foreign mission in Chile was expelled and indicted for making improper physical contact with a teenaged girl during a Korean-language session in September last year.
