Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are produced by bacteria during the fermentation process of sugar or lipids, including fats, oils, and waxes, for the storage of carbon and energy. They can be used with other monomers to create different types of bioplastics that break down over time. PHAs are 100 percent biodegradable even in seawater.
CJ CheilJedang said on November 27 that the food maker created compostable coating technology with similar durability and heat resistance to polypropylene and polyethylene. The new coating technique can be applied to various types of food packaging that require pouring hot water or microwave cooking. The biodegradable coating technology will be used for the paper containers of Hetbahn Cupbahn, an instant rice dish tailored for microwave cooking, in the first half of 2024.
CJ Cheiljedang has pushed for white biotechnology that uses living cells to synthesize easily degradable products. In April 2021, the food manufacturer partnered with SKC, a polyester film and chemical material manufacturer, to produce a biodegradable plastic material that is flexible and durable.
