SEOUL -- LG AI Research, the artificial intelligence technology wing of South Korea's LG Group, has joined the ranks of global tech companies that formed an accord to prevent the use of deceptive AI content from interfering with elections across the world in 2024.

While various types of AI technologies are utilized globally to make people's lives better, some are used to deceive and create chaos in societies by spreading false or misleading information. Malicious AI content can be frequently witnessed during election seasons.

Deepfake is one of the most common AI techniques used in video content. The technique is used to swap the face of a person or people in the original video with the face of the target person. Faces of top celebrities are often used to create fake explicit content or influence people who are not aware that the content they are watching is manipulated.

According to "Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections," LG AI Research joined some 20 leading tech companies including Google, Adobe, Amazon, Microsoft, and X (formerly known as Twitter), to prevent the distribution of malicious AI content and reduce its influence in this year's global elections in which more than four billion people in over 40 countries vote.

The tech accord designed to battle deceptive AI content was established at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) in February 2024. Signatories agreed to cooperate in an organized movement aimed at the detection and prevention of deceptive AI election content. The partner companies and organizations will also continue to foster public awareness, media literacy, and society resilience.
