The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday in Tamil Nadu. A passenger train carrying 1,360 passengers collided with a stationary freight train, causing 12 of its coaches to derail.
At least 19 passengers were injured, with four in critical condition, railroad authorities said. The scheduled operations of 18 trains were canceled as a result of the accident.
The authorities explained that the accident happened when the passenger train entered a loop line without receiving clearance for the mainline signal.
They added further investigation is required to determine why the train ignored the mainline signal and entered the track where the freight train was stationed.
