Overseas construction orders won by South Korean companies increased slightly year-on-year in 2014, the government said on Tuesday.

Construction firms won overseas orders worth US$66 billion in 2014, up 1.2 percent or $800 million from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The amount, which falls short of the ministry's goal of winning overseas orders worth $70 billion or more, was the second highest on record, following $71.6 billion tallied in 2010 during which South Korea won a deal to build a nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Orders from the Middle East, traditionally the largest market for South Korean construction companies, accounted for 47.5 percent or $31.35 billion of the total orders, followed by Asia with 24.1 percent or $15.92 billion, Africa with 13.6 percent or $8.95 billion, and Central and South America with 10.2 percent or $6.75 billion, the ministry said.
