The operation of heavy equipment including an excavator and a loader requires precision as such bulky machinery has a lot of blind spots. Many types of equipment use sonar sensors to detect obstacles in blind spots but they are not very accurate. According to government data, a total of 1,885 people were killed in heavy equipment accidents in South Korea between 2010 and 2020.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction said in a statement on August 23 that the company has adopted the artificial intelligence (AI) system to some of its construction sites to prevent accidents. The construction company did not disclose the number of sites but said that the system will be applied to every Hyundai E&C site.
The AI camera system uses multiple cameras installed on heavy equipment to display virtual views of blind spots on screens inside a cockpit. Hyundai E&C said that the company will continue to upgrade the system so that it can detect obstacles and workers located where AI cameras cannot search.
