SEOUL -- In a bit to promote a mega smart city construction project in Saudi Arabia, South Korea's transport ministry will host an exhibition at the Dongdaemun Digital Plaza (DDP), a design and arts center located in the heart of Seoul. Many South Korean companies showed their sincere interest in building NEOM, a smart city powered by renewable energy on the coast of the Red Sea.

A smart city is a city platform that interconnects city infrastructure including facilities and devices using mobile cable networks. A smart city platform uses artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous technologies, and big data to process real-time information collected through various kinds of sensors installed throughout the city.

The mega project NEOM is led by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. By 2030, the crown prince aims to build a smart city in deserts and mountainous areas near the Red Sea. Some $500 billion would be injected to build the smart city powered by renewable energy.

An exhibition titled "Discover NEOM: A New Future by Design" will take place at DDP from July 26 to August 3, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said. At the event, an automated seaport, a high-tech residential area will be showcased along with luxury hotels and golf courses. The exhibition will be available between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

In June 2023, a total of 10 South Korean companies attended a roadshow in Riyadh and promoted South Korean-type smart cities. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Crown Prince Mohammed have agreed to accelerate the exchange in many different sectors including startups, entertainment, joint funds, and joint investments in November 2022.
