SEOUL, July 05 (AJU PRESS) - Samsung SDI is reportedly close to securing a 1 trillion won ($725.32 million) contract to provide energy storage system (ESS) batteries to NextEra Energy, America's largest power company.
The deal, said to involve 6.3 GWh of batteries, represents 11.5 percent of North America's total ESS capacity last year.
The main product for this supply is the Samsung Battery Box (SBB), recently unveiled at InterBattery Europe 2024 in Germany. The SBB is a 20-foot container housing high-nickel NCA battery cells, modules, and racks, designed for improved space efficiency and increased battery capacity.
The new product boasts a 37 percent improvement in container energy density and enhanced fire prevention features through embedded direct injection (EDI) technology.
Samsung SDI declined to comment on the specifics of the deal.
This agreement is expected to strengthen Samsung SDI's position in the global ESS battery market, which is currently dominated by Chinese manufacturers.
ESS battery demand is projected to surge as countries increase solar power installations to address energy shortages.
The U.S. ESS market is forecast to grow from $7.9 billion in 2024 to $18.7 billion by 2030.
