SEOUL, October 7 (AJP) - Korea's media regulator plans to investigate TikTok for potential violations of information and data protection rules, industry sources said Monday.

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) is examining the social video platform's policy, which automatically requires users to consent to receiving marketing and advertising materials during sign-up, while such consent should be optional under the nation's information act.

The KCC plans to investigate TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, through the Korea Internet and Security Agency for possible breaches of the Information and Communications Network Act. If found guilty, the company could face fines of up to 30 million won (US$22,279).

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) is also looking into whether TikTok and TikTok Lite have violated the information protection act as they fail to inform users how to access the detailed content of their service terms and privacy policies during sign-up. TikTok Lite is a simplified version of the TikTok app.
