He is credited with transforming Tata Group into a global enterprise before stepping down in 2012.
Tata succeeded his uncle in 1991 as chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group. Under his leadership, the company successfully acquired major assets, including Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus in 2007 and U.K.-based luxury car brands Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008. In 2004, he also led the acquisition of Korea's Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, renaming it Tata Daewoo.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), honoring Tata as "a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being."
"He endeared himself to many thanks to his humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to making our society better," Modi said.
