India's coal and gas power generation reached around 250 gigawatts, while its hydropower and renewable energy capacity amounted to about 200 gigawatts, bringing the total to 450 gigawatts, according to news reports citing a September report from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Solar energy leads the renewable sources with 90 gigawatts, followed by wind energy at 47 gigawatts.
Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi noted that since 2014, India’s renewable energy capacity has increased by 175 percent, rising from 75 gigawatts to over 200 gigawatts.
However, challenges remain. A report from BloombergNEF in September pointed out that achieving India's carbon neutrality goal would require an investment of about US$12.4 trillion by 2050. The report also emphasized that solar and wind energy capacity needs to expand to 494 gigawatts by 2030.
The report projected India's electricity demand is projected to grow sixfold by 2050 compared to last year.
