BARCELONA -- LG Electronics' first 5G smartphone, V50 ThinQ, unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC), caused a mixed response from tech-savvy consumers and experts. As its main accessory, LG ambitiously introduced a "Dual Screen" cover case with an additional 6.2-inch display that can be used independently.
LG said users can watch a movie on one screen while simultaneously searching for information about the film on the other. V50 featured a 6.4-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Mobile chipset and a 5G modem.
The company showcased other flagship smartphones -- "G8 ThinQ" and "G8s ThinQ" -- for 4G mobile networks.
Some experts at South Korea's largest online IT community Clien said LG gave a good, innovative try at targeting the niche market. "The design of V50 and its case is beautiful I think the dual screen will come handy for some users who need to multitask," wrote Egregory, a Clien user."
Critics said LG's new phone adopted an old school idea. "Well, nothing has changed much from V40 except the new flagship's processor and a 5G modem," wrote Overflow. "Other makers such as ASUS and AXON have made similar phones with dual displays a few years ago and failed to appeal to consumers. I am afraid that LG will follow their footsteps," said Mr. Chumo.
