SEOUL -- South Korean companies have presented a variety of technologies related to software-defined vehicles at the Consumer Electronics Show, the world's biggest annual electronics exhibition held in Las Vegas. Visitors could explore solutions for next-generation vehicles such as autonomous vehicle technologies and advanced driver assistance systems.
A software-defined vehicle (SDV) is a futuristic car that consistently adapts to stay modern. New vehicle functions can be added or existing features can be modified through software upgrades that are carried out using physical wires or over-the-air (OTA) wireless software update features. South Korea's Hyundai auto group revealed its plan to transform all vehicles into SDVs by 2025 so they can be continuously upgraded and incorporate new features.
At the Consumer Electronics Show held from January 9 to January 12, StradVision, a Seoul-based vision processing technology provider for autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems, showcased advanced technology that enhances the interpretation of visual information from a two-dimensional perspective to a more sophisticated and detailed three-dimensional manner. This upgraded perception contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the surroundings for autonomous driving solutions.
South Korea's startup MORAI showcased a virtual simulation platform for self-driving vehicles. It offers a virtual environment where carmakers can test the safety and functions of their vehicles through multiple scenarios. Developers can demonstrate new technologies under many different conditions without causing an irreversible effect in real life.
During the global electronics event, global tech giant Samsung Electronics partnered with 42dot, a South Korean autonomous vehicle solution company, to cooperate in the development of SDV platform technologies. Samsung will provide 42dot with a development platform for Exynos, Samsung-developed system-on-chip (SoC) semiconductor chips.
An SoC has the features of a processor and other modular components installed into a single chip. SoCs are used in mobile devices because they are not as bulky as fully modular systems. Samsung will also offer Exynos SoC automotive processors specializing in connected vehicles.
