President Park Geun-hye Sunday nominated Ahn Ho-young, former first vice foreign minister, as new ambassador to the United States, the presidential office said.

Ahn, if he receives "agrement" from Washington, will replace Choi Young-jin.

Former lawmaker Kwon Young-se and Lee Byung-kee, an adviser for a think tank of the ruling Saenuri Party, were designated as new ambassador to China and Japan, respectively.

Kwon, designate for ambassador to Beijing, would replace Lee Kyu-hyung. Lee Byung-kee would succeed Shin Kak-soo as ambassador to Tokyo.

The three nominees will be appointed after receiving consent from the three countries on their nomination, the presidential office said.

Among those retained are Kim Sook, ambassador to the United Nations, and Wi Sung-lac, ambassador to Russia.

Ahn, tapped as ambassador to Washington, is a career diplomat. He served as ambassador to Belgium and the European Union before being named as first vice foreign minister. Ahn also worked as a coordinator for trade negotiations at the foreign ministry.

Kwon, nominee for ambassador to Bejing, served as a prosecutor. After failing to get reelected in the National Assembly elections in April last year, he worked as a key campaigner for President Park in the 2012 election.

Lee Byung-kee, designated as ambassador to Tokyo, served in Geneva, and worked as senior presidential secretary for protocol and second deputy chief of the National Intelligence Service.
