SEOUL -- German auto giant BMW has proposed the second recall of some 65,763 vehicles sold in South Korea, including 118d compact cars and MINI Cooper Ds, which were excluded from the first recall triggered by a string of engine fires.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Tuesday that BMW Korea has presented a preventive recall plan for safety to exchange components and clean pipes from November 26.
This month, experts discovered the risk of fires stemming from faulty components in an inspection of a 118D car which caught fire on September 11. The 118d model was excluded from the recall of some 106,000 vehicles that began in July after dozens of cars caught fire on the road.
BMW Korea has insisted that due to a faulty component in EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) modules, the high-temperature exhaust gas is suspected of inflowing into the intake manifold without being cooled, leading to the creation of a hole and a fire on the engine cover.
EGR reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines. Ministry officials are trying to determine whether BMW overlooked or covered up structural defects.
