SEOUL -- Cara Delevingne, a 27-year-old English model, actress and singer, became the first person to send her selfie into space in a SpaceSelfie marketing mission launched by Samsung Electronics, which sent Galaxy S10 5G smartphones into space inside a balloon to allow users to take selfies with the Earth in the background.
The specially designed balloon carrying two S10 5G smartphones was lifted up to 20 kilometers into the stratosphere to receive selfies transmitted from the Earth and send them back to the ground using a 5G network. Samsung said it would lift many selfies into the stratosphere so that consumers can get their own space selfie by uploading a photo to Samsung's website by October 31.
"I'm honored to be Samsung’s SpaceSelfie pioneer! To celebrate, I wanted to take the first group selfie to go to space. I can’t wait for my fans to join us in space and get their hands on a SpaceSelfie of their own," Delevingne said in a statement published by Samsung. Her selfie was taken at an event held at Samsung's experience store in London on October 23.
The SpaceSelfie mission began on October 16, receiving applications from consumers in 22 countries in Europe. Selfie photos are selected at random, captured using a unique view of planet earth as the backdrop and sent back down to earth for owners to share on social media.
"Tonight, we made history by unveiling the first selfie sent into space. Our relentless pioneering spirit continues to show that amazing things happen on Samsung screens -- even from the stratosphere,” said Benjamin Braun, Samsung Europe's chief marketing officer.
