SEOUL -- South Korea's main taekwondo academy will introduce new attractions using virtual reality and augmented reality technology. Tourists and trainees can learn martial art skills with a virtual instructor, or engage in person-to-person competition wearing special headsets.

It would utilize head-mounted display (HMD) devices, motion-detecting sensors, and haptic devices to provide realistic sensations. Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art that is especially popular among elementary school children as an after-school activity.

Taekwondowon, also known as Taekwondo Park, in Muju some 180 kilometers (111 miles) southeast of Seoul will operate virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) attractions on May 1.

"We hope that tourists from home and abroad approach Taekwondo as a fun and friendly sport through VR and AR experiences," Jang Yong-gap, head of the academy's Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, said in a statement.
