SEOUL -- South Korea's leading entertainment group CJ ENM which created the Oscar-winning film "Parasite," teamed up with Toei Animation, a Japanese animation studio, to produce content targeting global markets by using their intellectual properties. CJ ENM thinks the strategic alliance would boost its global move.
CJ ENM said Toei Animation's IP can be used to produce movies or dramas while the Japanese company can make animation by using CJ ENM's IP. The two companies have formed a joint task force for fast business development.
CJ ENM, credited with promoting Hallyu, has launched an aggressive push for content production targeting the global market. "Based on CJ ENM's ability to produce content verified in the global market, we will try to produce new types of transmedia content in both South Korea and Japan," said CJ ENM's R&D center head Yi Jong-min.
Transmedia refers to the relationship between different forms of media.
"The IP of Toei Animation has a strong fandom from middle-aged to young people around the world, so it can have a significant impact when dramas or movies were made into transmedia," Yi said. "Likewise, CJ ENM's 5,000 IPs are also expected to be a rich repository of infinite imagination for Toei Animation."
Toei Animation's executive producer Washio Takashi predicted "strong synergy" by combining CJ ENM's globally recognized content planning, production capabilities and new trends with Toei Animation's numerous hit animation production experiences and abundant IP.
