SEOUL -- For an annual professional men's golf tournament in the southern resort island of Jeju,  SK Telecom, a top mobile carrier in South Korea, will deploy an autonomous delivery robot installed with cameras to provide water and drinks on-site galleries and players.

Through a partnership with Neubility, a domestic delivery robot startup, SK Telecom (SKT) will apply "Metatron Grandview" technology to the self-driving delivery robot at Jeju's Pinx Golf Club, the site for SK Telecom Open that is to begin on June 2. The technology helps efficient operation by collecting and analyzing various data through sensors.

"SK Telecom Open will bring new attractions and entertainment to golf fans through our AI service,"  SKT's chief PR officer Kim Hee-sub said in a statement on May 26. Every year, the mobile carrier has introduced new technologies to increase the level of realism and immersion.

At this year's competition, SKT introduced a Plus Bar service to provide abundant information to TV viewers. Plus Bar is a real-time interworking two-way data service that allows viewers to check various information and data using a remote control. Information on players and rankings that cannot be confirmed in regular broadcasting can be directly checked.

Using AI highlight editing technology, viewers can watch the play of favorite players as a video. SKT said it would expand the Plus Bar service to major domestic golf tournaments and other sports events.

By combining various ICT know-how, SKT has shown new broadcasting trends such as metaverse live broadcasting using radar technology to show shot trajectories realistically in a virtual space and an audio separation technology that eliminated on-site noise so that viewers can vividly hear conversations between players and caddies.

The metaverse is a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space. It describes a future internet of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe.

For metaverse broadcasting, SKT introduced various technologies. An AI highlight technology automatically edits major scenes in real-time. An audio separation technology eliminates on-site noise so that viewers can vividly hear conversations between players and caddies. An AI slow-motion technology converts swing movements to 120 frames per second.
